are you doing it in neutral or park? ive had 4 different zj and i currently own a zj and wj and on the zjs SOME work on park and some in both park and neutral, if youre doing it in neutral try it in park, i had a blue laredo 5.2 and it would go into 4wd but it would grind and sound like there was something broken down there, someone told me to ALWAYS do it in park and i tried it for the first time(afer owning 2 jeep and always doing it in neutral with no grinding) and it did not make a sound what so ever, the reason im not sure BUT ive heard both and park seems to have worked better since it has never grind for me, Good luck!

About: 96 Jeep Grand Cheroke Laredo, Possible transmission slipping

96 Jeep Grand Cheroke Laredo, Possible transmission slipping
Okay First off, my car has almost 212k miles on it. Lately my car won't go into gear properly. In the morning (I go to work at 5 a.m.) I will start it up and let it sit to warm up for a few minutes and then I will put it in gear. When I put it in gear (If I need to put it in Reverse) It won't move what-so-ever, it just sits there like its in neutral and it will do it even if I have to put it in drive to get out of my driveway or if I have to put it in reverse and turn it around. And if it is facing front I have to be on the gas or it'll fall back wards, It acts like it is in neutral by just sitting there and not moving, I'll just be revving the engine up. And it does it after work too. I work for 5 and a half hours. I'll turn the car on, let it is sit and then put it into gear. It'll do the same thing and it'll act like its being held back. I checked the transmission fluid and it's fine. The other day, I put my car in 4wd because of the rain (I fishtailed) so I felt better with it in. Well I couldn't get it out of 4wd gear. I put it back in 2wd but my car drove like it was still in 4wd. I kept trying to get it out but It didnt work until my 3rd attempt. Any advice?

I hate to be the barer of bad news but it does sound like the transmission is "giving up the ghost" so to speak, but first try the inexpensive route, check the fluid level and "smell the oil" the oil on the transmission dipstick should be a semi-clear RED or light burgandy, if the oil is very dark and smells like rotten eggs the transmission is in bad shape. on this type of transmission if it won't back up it is time for replacement.
