Spray the heck out of the latching mechanism with WD40. I mean open the door & spray inside the striker. Might be a switch in there sticking, it happened on my '98 Ford & this worked.

The dome light switch between the door hinges is probably sticky and needs to be lubricated or replaced. If the power locks are working randomly, check the door wiring harnesses connection.

Both of your probs are probably co-related. You have a bad door switch which is keeping the dome lamp on. Also, this switch tells the BCM (body control module) that a door has been opened and to lock the doors when the vehicle speed exceeds 15mph. Now the trick is to find out which one is bad. Logic dictates that the driver's door is the most used, thus is more likely to fail first, followed by the right front door. Hope this helps!

if it has a remote lock system that could be the source of the problem for the door locks. this happened on my 2000 xj. I had to get a new remote. and it fixed the random locking and unlocking of the doors

We have the same problem on a 98 Grand Cherokee. Dome light stays on. I have disconected all four door switches, the rear hatch wiring and the headlight switch... The light is still on. I figure either one of the door wires is gong to ground, or the body control module is bad. Try to let you know more when I do. fixithud@yahoo.com

About: Will this key work in an 89 Jeep Cherokee

Will this key work in an 89 Jeep Cherokee?
I need to get a new key cut for my 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. The key in this link says for 98-01, but is that the years they were given with new cars, or the only years the keys will work with. thanks http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370227338763&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Unfortunantly no. The Grand Cherokee changed SKIM modules nearly every year through production. You can cut an 98 key for a 89 vehicle but it will just start and die because that key cannot be programmed for your 89 SKIM module. Sorry.
2 :
no, the 89 uses a GM style key. Even the key cylinder in the column is different. Mike http://thejeepguru.com

Which key do you need copied? The ignition uses P1098J (B46), the doors use RA3 (S1970AM). The vehicle doesn't have a SKIM module. The key you posted wasn't used until 1996 and is completely incompatible with your vehicle. (It won't go in)
