About: Smog Emission removal for a 1990 Jeep Laredo

Smog Emission removal for a 1990 Jeep Laredo?
I am fixing my jeep up for an off road toy. A friend from work says there are many parts I can remove from the engine that only reduce smog. due to the area I live in there are no DEQ regulations. what can I get rid of while I am in the process of a total rebuild?

I only read as far as "smog emission removal" because this is simply against federal law unless the vehicle is to remain unregistered and never driven on public roads.
2 :
The catalytic converter, and O2 Sensors are the major players when it comes to smog control. But if you are making this an off road toy just buy a header (if it is the 4.0L) or headers (V8 models) and a high flow muffler. If you really want no restriction you can out a bypass in and with the flip of a switch you can dump straight from the header. You will need to hook up the "dummy" plug 02 sensors as the computer will be looking for some sort of feedback from them otherwise you'll get codes and a motor that doesn't run quite rite.

They would start by asking for ransom. If that person has family in the U.S. the ransom will be higher. In the past fingers have been cut off, and in most cases the person was killed, even after they received the ransom money. If the person that was kidnapped was involved with the cartels he would probably be tortured and killed. This has caused the Mexican government to bring the death penalty to people who kidnap and then kill their hostages.

My 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6cyl 4wd heater quit working.?
My suv overheated and I fixed the hole in the radiator (stop leak)and did a complete radiator flush and still working fine. However a few days later my heater quit blowing hot air. It blows great just cool air. It happend all of a sudden and temperature gauge wasn't affected when this happend. What could be the problem?

1 :
Heater core going out. When you smell antifreeze coming out the vents it's about completely shot.
2 :
its the radiator again or the heating core...you might have a slow leak somewhere........
3 :
I have a Chrysler mini-van. Same manu of jeeps, and I had that problem when my coolants run low. Just that first.
4 :
The heater core is out when you flushed the radiator you may have stopped up the heater core it is a radiator underneath the dash board, good luck.
5 :
for some reason the hot water is not getting to your heater core. why did the radiator overheat in the first place, Could maybe be your thermostat, which could have caused your overheat. maybe the vaccuum line to the heater core valve, maybe the core itself is now plugged by the stop leak. if i could physicaly be there, I could maybe tell you!
6 :
You have an air pocket in the cooling system, or the thermostat is stuck open. If you suspect an air pocket, which might not show up for a few days, loosen the heater hose clamp nearest the thermos at and partly remove the hose. Leave the engine off, and remove the radiator cap. Observe the coolant level. Fill if needed until coolant is present at the hose. You might have a heater control valve, if so manually hold it open. Once coolant is present re-install the hose and clamp, fill the radiator until it is full. Also fill the overflow reservoir untill it is aboce full-cold. Re-check the overflow every once in awhile to make sure it stays full. This should correct the problem. If you end up changing the thermostat use the above procedure to bleed the system, or anytime you repair the cooling system.
7 :
2 things, you have a air pocket in your heater core or you have plugged the heater core with stop leak. hold both heater hoses and see if there both hot, if there not then go from there.
8 :
Christiano hit it the closest, what happened is when you put in the stop leak it clogged the heater core, along with any rust in the system. what you need to do is replace the radiator, stop leak and fix a flat are 2 items that should have never been invented. but any way when you replace the radiator unhook both heater hoses from the water pump and thermostat housing. have one going to something underneath the jeep to catch th coolant and crap that comes out. through the other one run water from a hose.what i do is get the female hose repair end and screw it on then clamp the heater hose on the end that slides in.after doing that for a minute switch heater hoses. repeat until all the crap is out of the heater core. then flush the entire cooling system just run a short hose from the heater hose fitting on the thermostat to the one on the waterpump. after that hook the heater hoses back up and have at it.

2 :
Your thermostat is likely stuck in the open position. A gentle tap on the housing area may jolt it back to life.
3 :
Oh my god these people should not be answering questions, didn"t hit your thermostat it wont JOLT it back in to place, there are a couple of possibilities, yes a defective thermostat could be the problem, if so it must be replaced not hit to JOLT it back. also the heater core could be plugged and the coolant is not flowing into the car properly. It could be just low on coolant, however if it low on coolant there is a reason, there is a leak somewhere. The last thing is your mode doors that open and close in your heater box might not be functioning properly and wont open the door to allow heat in. Where to start, check the coolant level first, if its low fill it with a 50/50 antifreeze mix and look for leak. If not check the temp of the coolant, also grab the heater hoses that go In the the car through the firewall be careful not to burn yourself these could be 230 degrees, grab the upper and then grab the lower if there is a significant difference in temp the heater core is plugged, if not and they are 200 degrees then your thermostat is probably ok also and you have a condition with the doors inside.
4 :
it could be a couple of reasons like the heater core is clogged up or the thermostat is stuck open.

Jeep G.C. Laredo, left taillight signal not working? Anyone have any thing i can do to fix it?
Hi i have a 2007 Grand Cherokee Laredo. Driving on the road one of my friends noticed that my left taillight signal wasn't working when they were following me.. When Breaking, all three lights light up (left, right and top work perfectly), only issue is when i do left turn signals it doesn't work.. In the Jeep i've noticed, that when i turn my left signal, its rhythm is twice as fast as it were before and only the front signal works. To anyone who have an idea, is there anything i can do to fix it before i bring it to the dealer or the mechanic? Please.. this started happening just today.. Thanks for anyone who have good answers..

You have different filiments in the bulb for turning, braking, stopping; if one breaks the others keep working. Replace the bulb and the problem is solved.

Visit the local Chamber of Commerce or ask a hotel receptionist or gas station employee. Or a local if your not too shy. It's quite unlikely that anyone here with knowledge of this area will see or respond to your question.

Make cloths like prom dresses or design things to sell or throw a community talent show or do some volunteer work

The best thing to do is stay alive. I wouldn't move to Laredo on a bet. That or El Paso either.

First of all, LAREDO IS SAFE! So many people think the problems of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico happen in Laredo too. They don't. Whats to do? Well most of the locals spend too much time shopping and eating. Also there is the back yard cookout........ every night is fine. Does your neighborhood have the aroma of bbq fajitas every night? Ours does. While your in the back yard you can drink beer, another major Laredo Hobby. There is not really much to do here unless you invent your own things.

I'm having trouble sweating under the scorching sun. Why?
Hi everyone, I live in Laredo, Texas and, because of need of money, I started working construction. Laredo is a very hot place. Today, for example, it was 108F. Strangely, even though I worker under the sun, I seem to be unable to sweat. I drink about a gallon and a half of water everyday, but nothing. It is really annoying because I can't cool my body. Is there something wrong with me? What can I do about this? -Thank you.

and when i turn on the right blinker and turn the steering wheel right it also freezes so do i need to replace the bulb, the wiring, the switch or what? Also my Front Windshield Wipers don't work anymore is it the Motor,The Switch or What?
Jeep - 2 Answers

1 :
Windshield wiper is likely the circuit breaker at the bottom of the fuse box. The contacts can corrode and loose connection. The blinker problem is likely a bad bulb socket not grounding properly. If the bulb looses ground in the socket, it will ground back trough the turn signal circuit and cause this kind of problem. Mike http://thejeepguru.com
2 :
Pretty easy fix - just top off your blinker fluid. Most people don't know that the old blinker fluid should be changed every 150000 blinks. It's cheap only about $10 for a bottle that will last you easily the life of the car. I'll put a link in the source.

Normally if you back up it will go out of 4WD

sometimes the 4wd sensor goes out. I doubt its locking hubs, because i'm sure you would of tried that. the only thing i can think of is that sensor.
3 :
I have a 2003, but I had this happen. The book tells you to do it in park usually, then its optional in motion, i would try going around a cul-de-sac block nearby and try to shift it while driving. Mine will only shift while in motion. Its worth a try, if that doesn't work, I would guess something went wrong like the other answerer said.

About: What is wrong with my 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo

What is wrong with my 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?
About 2 years ago my Cherokee began shifting funny. I checked my tranny fluid and found there to be none showing on the dipstick, so I added a few quarts. A day or so later I was on my way somewhere and as I was leaving a town, trying to pick up speed, the Jeep started losing speed. I pulled it over and turned it off, then tried restarting it and pulling away. I couldn't move forward or reverse, it was like there was no transmission there. I checked the fluid again and it showed none. In these few days I had never noticed any puddles or spots under my Jeep so I haven't a clue where the fluid was going. I had to have my dad pull the beast to my work where it sat until I had time to haul it home. My dad has looked into the problem and has come to the conclusion that the neutral safety switch is the problem. He said it is impossible to take out forward and reverse gears together, that when a tranny goes the gear you are in is what goes. Someone please shed some light on the problem!!
Maintenance & Repairs - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
internal leak perhaps maybe the tranny is seized from no fluid
2 :
the neutral safety switch is only for starting the car ,to make sure that it is in either park or neurtral. so it doesn't start in gear, it sound like when you ran low on fluid that you burned out the pump since you now have no gears.
3 :
that switch only tells them computer that the car is in neutral or park so it will allow it to start i have seen alot of them leak but if is leaking fluid you need to fix the leak first .. the transmission works on hydrolic pressure and if there is no fluid in the trans it will not work
4 :
Neutral safety switch is electrical and does not prevent the truck from moving--it keeps you from starting unless the shifter is in Park or Neutral. Sounds like you need more fluid added---make sure truck is warmed up and sitting level....add fluid as necessary to bring it up to the full mark on the dipstick. Let it run for a while and recheck the level. You must have a leak somewhere if it's getting low periodically....check the underside of the vehicle for any evidence of trans fluid residue on the body or frame. Fluid leaks can sometimes occur where the fluid is blown backwards from driving and will wind up caking the body instead of dripping on the ground. Low fluid level will cause a loss of pressure in the valve body of the trans and can cause multiple gears (or bands) to not operate properly. Bands for the different gears need pressure to apply them and a friction band going bad is not always for the gear you are in when driving. Some misconceptions here. May want to have a trans shop or repair shop pull the trans pan and inspect it for how much friction material or metal flakes are in the bottom of it which can indicate how much life the trans has left.
5 :
The trucks have great transmissions in them, Jeep use a trans mission that was produced for the Toyota trucks...(automatic trans)...anyway there are a couple things you can check for....there a two lines that run from your trans to your radiator to cool you trans fluid...part of the line it metal and then there is a short foot or two gap that is rubber...alot of times the lines will dry rot so check where they go in to the radiator , some times the fluid will leak down the lines and blow off as you drive down the road , you can also look at the bottom of the radiator and see if fluid is pooling up there...check where the lines go into the trans, there is also a seal at the back of the trans, it fits into the tail piece where the drive shaft slides in (this is a cheap part easy to fix) ...look at the bottom of the jeep alot of trans leaks don't end up on the ground because the fluid sits in the pan when the car is not running or in gear...when the car is moving it blow it away and all over the bottom of the car...so look and see if theres alot of road grime and if it is oily in Constancy ...hope i helped some
6 :
When you checked it the first and all times, was the engine running? Sounds like the to much fluid, foamed up "Aerated", locked up the pump and no more transmission. ALSO; Check cooling system to see if the transmission cooler line in the radiator is broken, Transmission Fluid in the Radiator.

What is wrong with my 1999 Grand Jeep Cherokee Laredo?!?
I have a 1999 Grand Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 142000 miles on it. I have replaced the transmission, transducer, water pump (2 times), fan, radiator, and thermostat. Here lately it has been overheating. I replaced the fan, radiator, and thermostat in the last week and it's still overheating. I can't even go 1/2 a mile before it's boiling and it will only blow cold air now the heater will not work. What's left? Could it be the water pump again?
Maintenance & Repairs - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The engine must have water in it for the gauge to register a temp. All the overheating problems could be a blown head gasket or a cracked in it at a water port.
2 :
If you are buying rebuilt water pumps you need to make sure they are for the correct engine. Some previous 4.0 engines (if that's what you have) used a pump that had a clockwise rotation. The correct pump should have an "R" stamped on the impeller. It also sounds like there is an air lock in the system because of your mention of on heat. You need to remove one of the heater hoses at the firewall to release the air.

i think my 1993 jeep Grnd Cherokee laredo is stuck in a high gear and OD does not work?
i drive a 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo, its a 4L |6 the tranny has been overhauled about a year and a half ago...no problems until now. last night as i was driving, it was working fine until i suddenly felt it shifting at wrong times. then i pulled over and when i wanted to move again it seems like it is stuck in a high gear simply because there is low torque. engine was reving around two grand and the jeep felt like it was struggling. i also noticed that when i tried pressing OD (overdrive), the light will not turn on. but when i start the jeep it blinks once..any idea what is causing this no shift and no OD problem...could it be bad plugs/ wires? thanks in advance test drove it again this morning and still no shift...all forward gears seems like they are in high gear even when i shift it into 2 and 1. reverse works fine....going up my driveway, i could remember seeing 2500-3000 rpm and it struggles. no check engine light, and OD light wont' light up when i press it. i will be taking it back...but i did a test where u turn the jeep on-off-on-off-on then watch how many times that OD light, lights up. it shows that it might be a bad vehicle speed sensor...i will also look into it...thanks for the input guys

For one thing, the OD light means overdrive is off. And 2500-300rpm going up the driveway means it's obviously not in high gear. Why would you not take it back to whoever overhauled the transmission?

If my tires started slipping, the vehicle would go into 4wd or is it always in 4wd even on dry pavement, also could I put a 4wd system in my jeep like what was in a wrangler where you shift.

if yours is the qudra trac II (thats what is in my jeep) when the tires start to slip 4wd will kick in and i think if you put it in 4lo it will stay in untill you put it back (not sure never used my 4lo) i dont like it i would rather have the slect trac 4wd
2 :
You would have to change the transfer case and probably a bunch of other stuff to convert to SelecTrac, which is the manual shift system.
3 :
Depends on which 4x4 system you have. Some are part time some are full time, and some are a combination of the 2. First lets start with the part time system. This system should only be used in low traction conditions such as off road, or in snow, mud, sand, etc, where the vehicle in 2WD mode cannot keep a steady forward momentum you should engage 4WD Hi range. This allows full speed capabilities with all 4 wheels being able to move the vehicle. In extreme cases you can engage 4WD Lo range if the vehicle is mired in deep mud, snow, sand, or for higher torque needed when trying to pull a heavy load. Most times there is also a neutral position which is used to tow the vehicle on all 4 wheels. The full time 4WD system allows the vehicle to be in 4WD all the time with a 40/60 torque split normally. When a difference in traction is detected by the center differential power is transferred to the axle with the most traction automatically. This type of system is engaged all the time and requires no input from the driver. Some systems include a low range 4x4 mode for the same use as mentioned under the part-time 4wd system. Also there is probably a neutral position in this system also. The combination (full/part time 4wd system) incorporates both systems into one transfer case. Allowing the driver to decide which position to drive the vehicle in. This is great for situations where you are driving in snow or ice but the road is not completely covered there may be dry spots or just places that are wet in which you would use full time 4wd high range that way you aren't shifting into and out of 4wd constantly. If conditions worsen you could shift into 4wd hi range part time and have the system "locked" into 4wd and all 4 wheels will continuously pull the vehicle forward. Along with both of those positions you still have a 4wd lo range position just as mentioned above, and also you still have the neutral position. This type of system I think is by far the greatest idea as it gives the driver the option of full time or part time usage. Also with this system you can leave it in full time 4wd high range year round if you wish. A note of advice for engaging 4WD lo range with any of the above systems, you have to have the vehicle rolling 2-3mph, shift the transmission into neutral, and move the transfer case shift lever through all positions and into 4lo. Being completely stopped will cause the system to not fully engage or not engage at all. As for a 4WD system as in a wrangler, the 4WD systems are basically the same, or offered in both types of vehicles. The wrangler's 4WD systems are just geared lower in 4wd lo range for extreme off road usage. Hope this helps, but if you have further questions please feel free to email me at wsevier@yahoo.com.

Which system do you have? 1. Select Trac (similar to the system in Wranglers) 2. Comand-Trac (A fulltime 4WD system pioneered by Jeep in the 70's)
5 :
I f you go to jeep.com and go to 4x4basics at the top of the page there;ll be a list of different things and on that list will be how jeep 4x4 systems work, simply click on that and then goquadra trac and it'll explain everthing.

Um, if you're sure it's a 4x4, then it's the lever to the left of the shifter. Ideally, you'll shift while going around 5mph. Sometimes that not practical, so just deal. To shift into 4 Low only, I'm pretty sure you want the transmission to be in neutral first.

keep it and drive it.. think how nice it will be to not have a car payment.. then you will discover the difference between owning a car, and being in the process of buying one... never trade in a car ...it is a total ripoff ! sell your old car outright if you feel you must have a newer one
2 :
This is the concept of "equity" If you really only have 6 months worth of payments left on it you probably have a "Positive" equity situation. This means that the car is worth more than is owed on the vehicle. If you owe 5000 on the car and the car is worth $10000, the by trading in the car you effectively put down 5000 dollars.
3 :
You can trade it in but if you owe more than its worth than the difference will be added on to the new loan. Let say you owe 5k but the dealership says its only worth 3k than the remaining 2k will be added to the new loan, so you will not only pay for the new car but you will also pay 2k on the old car. However if the car you owe 5k on is worth 7k than the remaining 2k will count as a down payment. remember dealer trade in values are lower than the market value and if you can find an independent buyer to buy your car you can usually get more money. My advice is to sell you car for what you owe on it and get a new one without having to worry about carrying any negative equity into the new loan.
4 :
You almost always do better to sell a car yourself, and then take the cash to put down as a down payment. But you can trade it in, as long as you consider the deal on the new car, as a whole. Dealers will sometimes offer you huge money on a trade-in to make you feel like you're getting a great deal, but then the difference is made up in the price charged for the new car. Negotiate these things separately. You can research the cost of new cars on the net, and car dealers are much more open to discussing price on the phone than they used to be. Get what you consider to be a good price on the car you want, and then negotiate the value of the trade-in. Good luck!
5 :
Whatever the dealer offers you an a trade-in he will add to the price of the car. When you begin your search for a newer car make no mention of a trade-in with the salesman and see what his best offer is wihout a trade-in...THEN and only then mention that you want to trade in your car. Watch his attitude (and the price) change! You're better off to sell your jeep to a private buyer and use that money towards a down payment.
6 :
I would do your homework before going to a dealership. Jeeps usually keep their values but depends on how many miles it has, what the interior/exterior condition is etc. I would start chunking down more money on it to pay it off sooner but if you really dont want to wait for it to be paid off go to nada.com and kbb.com and get trade in values from each on your specific car. Take those to the dealership with you. Also get an exact 10 day payoff amount from the lien holder and take that information also. Dont forget you can negotiate on what the dealer gives you for your trade. Call around and see if other dealers will match the trade. Try not to have negative equity rolled into the new loan if possible. If they wont give you enough for your trade try selling it by yourself. Hope this helps!!
7 :
The dealer will try to screw you to the wall! They ALL do! So, before you ever go in there, you need to know about what your car is worth retail, and what it is worth wholesale. You can go to Kelly Blue Book (under "Autos") and find it's approximate value. If you would like, send me your info (year, mileage, equipment, condition, pics, etc) and I can tell you it's approximate value Then, when you go to the dealer, you can simply subtract your cars value from the new car's price. This will give you the difference that you will have to pay. Of course, you will need to figure in your remaining loan. Again, they will try to dazzle you with numbers, but if you do your homework ahead, you can save literally thousands of dollars. tomcattin0@lycos.com

My advice to you since you've done everything you could think of for next to nothing, is to take it to a shop and let a professional have a look.
2 :
there should be 2 fuse boxes one under the hood which you found and one under the dash somewhere also check the relay for the lights too it might be bad and thats why you are not getting other than that you will need to get a test light and find out if there is a bad ground somewhere or a bad wire some where hope this helps
3 :
Check the Taillight fuse I the main fuse boxes. If not there, then you are looking at the light switch. Keep in mind the air bag close to this switch. It can be set off. At close range it can kill you. I would have a mechanic check this switch and replace it. There safety steps that has to be taken first. It around $1500.00 to replace the air bag.
