About: Swapped NP231 doesn't work

Swapped NP231 doesn't work?
95 ZJ Laredo. I replaced my old NP231J (broken chain) with a used (working) one from a 97cherokee. I had to break them open to swap the output shaft, which I thought went fine. I put everything back together today and now the transfer case won't engage at all. It works in 2WD. Any tips on how to troubleshoot it?

Will it shift out of 2wd?

I don't know if this is the case, but different years had some minor changes.

If the t-case is in the Jeep I would start with adjusting the linkage. That may or may not work. But in reality you'll probably have to break open the case again and check the mode shift fork. (there's two different shift forks in the t-case; the range fork for hi/lo and the mode fork for 2WD/4WD). And that's only a couple of parts, there's a lot of internal differences and there are two different mode shift forks depending on the transfer case ID#. While you could do a straight case swap on some models the internals are different and you may have to do a lot of parts swapping case-to-case. That could be your problem and the only way to tell is to break it open, again. Check out the link below to check out a parts diagram for the NP231 and you'll see the different parts for different case ID's on the 231's.

As Steve A says there are a couple of different styles of 231Js out there. You will need to follow the diagram that he linked for you. Compare the internals of both and you may end up putting the Cherokee T/C in your ZJ to make everything work. Start with linkage and go deeper if that does NOT solve your problems. Best of luck.
